In The Life of a Fitness Model (Sci GE interview and video)

On the weekend of the 10th of June I spent some time with Evaristor aka ‘Sci GE’ to see what it is like in the life of a fitness model. Evaristor is a Namibian bodybuilder based in Walvis Bay – where I had the opportunity to meet with him and discuss topics like his training, diet and mindset. Along with the interview, we were shooting the awesome motivational behind the scenes video below.

The initial feeling you get when meeting him is always that this guy is cool, he just has a sort of swag to the way he carries himself. But when you really get to know him it’s evident that he is a very good listener and he stays humble about his own accomplishments. He is a man with vision and a few hours with him will remind you of your once lost ambition. Evaristor, unlike many of us in the fitness world, works in the dark. You won’t see him boasting much, but I believe he will receive more spotlight soon!

ATHLETE PROFILE:

NAME: Evaristor Gylgrister

AGE: 29

WEIGHT: 73.5kg

HEIGHT: 1.74m

Q: WHEN DID YOU START WEIGHT TRAINING AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?

SCI GE

A: ‘My weight training journey started around 8 years ago. I was introduced by a friend of mine who was a boxer that regularly trained in a gym. I fell in love from the first day, I was always skinny and seeing myself get bigger was great, you know.’

Q: HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED TO KEEP WORKING HARD IN THE GYM?

A: ‘First of all it’s because of my health. And also, I HATED how small my physique was, it was always very hard for me to gain weight. After I started seeing results, competing became a passion and I love the feeling I get when I motivate others.’

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

A: ‘I would make myself understand earlier that training is just everything. I mean it’s therapy for the mind and body. My mind just stays positive when I’m reaching my fitness goals. I would remind myself of that.’

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS IN BODYBUILDING?

A: ‘I want to keep taking my goals to the next level. I want to build my own name into a brand and get my stuff out there to keep motivating others. I want to start my own high-quality clothing line and supplements because I’m not 100% satisfied with what is out there. I’m always looking for the opportunity.’

Q: WHO INSPIRES YOU?

A: ‘The first bodybuilder I looked up to – Dexter Jackson.’

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRAINING SPLIT?

A: ‘I like to switch it up from week to week, I prioritize different muscles in week 1 than in week 2.’

His training split looks like this:

WEEK 1 (heavy) 4 sets of 4-6 reps on most exercises

MONDAY: Lower body

TUESDAY: Chest

WEDNESDAY: Back

THURSDAY: Shoulders ‘I love dumbbell shoulder press!’

FRIDAY: ‘On Fridays I do my guns!’

In the second week Evaristor likes to change it up and work from Monday to Saturday. He would start with legs again on Monday, but on Tuesday he would do shoulders and then back again. He finds that switching the days up let’s him focus more energy and strength on the important muscles.

Q: HOW DO YOU CONTROL YOUR DIET?

A: ‘Oh diet is one of the biggest parts. It’s hard for me to gain weight, so I have to eat carbs through the day with all my meals for energy to train and to have enough calories in me. To be honest I’m so busy all the time I need to force myself to get around to eating. I try to keep all my meals quick and easy. I would have 3-5 meals of high carbohydrate foods along with good quality protein.’

Q: DO YOU USE ANY SUPPLEMENTS? WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?

A: ‘Yeah, I use the basic stuff like a protein shake, creatine, BCAA, a natural test booster from SSn and my Omega 3 and 6’s. I also use a mass gainer when I can because it helps me consume more calories and hold on to my weight. I do not take pre-workout that often, I don’t really need it.’

Q: IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE?

A: ‘Like I always tell everyone in the gym; This sport, if you want to get far in it you will have to set big goals. But you must also know it doesn’t happen overnight. It will take time, but you will reach your goals. You must stay motivated.’
